Councillor's home reno among heritage projects recognized

Three Saanich families were recognized by the Hallmark Society earlier this month for their dedication to heritage preservation.

Coun. Vicki Sanders and her husband Dennis Sanders were among those who received an award of merit. The couple restored her childhood home, at 3956 Stan Wright Ln.

"I think Saanich recognizes that the community has a pride and a sense of value in our heritage," Coun. Sanders said. "Also it acknowledges the importance of the people who've lived in those homes and the families that lived in those homes."

Her father, Stan V. Wright, was a magazine and book wholesaler.

The period-revival cottage, located just off Reynolds Road, was built in 1937.

The Sanders have invested a lot of money restoring the home, making it more energy efficient while maintaining its heritage charm.

"Heritage doesn't have to be old, that's not what heritage means. It means typical of an era," Sanders said.

Also recognized by the Hallmark Society were heritage projects at 4423 Tyndall Ave., and 1996 Ferndale Road.

"It's a nice acknowledgement that there are people that understand the value of preserving," Sanders said. "They acknowledge that painstaking work of restoration, preservation, and the look toward the future by saving something that's from the past."
