Election results: Liberal majority looms as red wave washes into B.C.

Justin Trudeau will be Canada's next prime minister, Liberals now expected to form majority government

The Liberals are now projected to form a majority government.

Justin Trudeau will be the next prime minister and although results are continuing to flow in, his party is currently projected to win more than 180 seats, above the 170 threshold to wield a majority.

Trudeau’s win was declared by all three major television networks before polls closed in B.C. at 7:00, although the majority was not yet called at that point.

As of 7:50 p.m., the Liberals were leading in 181 seats, the Conservatives in 103, the NDP was ahead in 33, and 10 were going Bloc Quebecois.

Those results include a sweep for the Liberals in all 32 Atlantic seats, with Conservative cabinet ministers Gail Shea and Bernard Valcourt and Halifax NDP MP Megan Leslie among those headed for defeat.

Conservative Immigration Minister Chris Alexander, caught in a controversy over Canada’s response to the Syrian refugee crisis, lost his seat in Ajax, Ont. as the Liberals solidified a likely majority government.
