First responders were kept busy Thursday morning in downtown Victoria as they were called out to multiple calls for overdoses, all before 9 a.m.

Last year illicit drug overdoses killed 914 people, nearly doubling overdose numbers from the year before.

So far in 2017, just over 1,100 people have died of overdose-related deaths in British Columbia. The province is already on track to record at least 500 more than last year.

According to statistics from the BC Coroners Service, fentanyl continues to be detected in more than eight out of every 10 deaths and carfentanil has been detected in 37 deaths between June and September.
