Former MLA Elizabeth Cull to seek federal NDP nomination in Victoria

Cull becomes second potential candidate along with Murray Rankin for NDP nomination Oct. 14

A former provincial NDP cabinet minister and deputy premier has announced her intention to seek the federal NDP nomination in the upcoming Victoria byelection.

Elizabeth Cull, who served as Oak Bay-Gordon Head MLA from 1989 to 1996, made the announcement Thursday morning.

“I was part of the Harcourt NDP administration here in British Columbia, I know that economic health relies on the health of our citizens, our environment and our communities,” Cull said in a news release.

Cull owns businesses in Victoria and Oak Bay, is a supporter of the urban farming movement and a member of several Victoria area business associations.

According to the release, she also helped spearhead Shop Local Victoria, an organization that fosters local shopping as a way to build community stability, and currently teaches at the United Way Policy Institute.

Cull is the second person to declare an intention to seek the NDP nomination, which takes place Oct. 14.

Murray Rankin, an environmental lawyer and former University of Victoria law professor, made his announcement Monday.

The federal seat was made vacant after Denise Savoie stepped down Aug. 31 for health reasons.
