Governor general appoints 3 University of Victoria leaders to the Order of Canada

One of Canada’s highest civilian honours goes to trio from UVic community Dec. 29

Three University of Victoria leaders are new members of the Order of Canada – recognized for distinguished service to a community, group, or field of activity.

Jacques Lemay, a performing arts expert and professor in UVic’s department of theatre, and David Zussman, public sector leader and the chair of UVic’s board of governors, are among 135 new appointments to the Order of Canada.

UVic biology professor Verena Tunnicliffe was also named an officer for her contribution to ocean sciences.

The governor general of Canada, Mary Simon, made the announcement on Dec. 29.

Zussman was appointed for his successful career in academia, government and non-profit, a release said.

“I’ve devoted my professional life to finding ways to improve leadership in government and in post-secondary institutions and other communities,” said Zussman. “The University of Victoria has a vital role to play in developing tomorrow’s leaders and I am delighted to be a part of the work of this excellent institution. I am honoured to be appointed a Member of the Order of Canada and I look forward to my continued involvement with UVic.”

Lemay was appointed for contributions to performing arts in Canada. His career has spanned working with the Charlottetown Festival to the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Olympics and Victoria Commonwealth Games opening ceremonies, as well as six Royal visits.
