Hillside home destroyed by fire

Resident injured, house uninhabitable

A Victoria couple was burned out of their home last weekend.

At about 6:30 p.m. Sunday, a fire broke out in the living room of a house at 2754 Forbes St. in the Hillside area.

When firefighters arrived, flames were licking out the windows on three sides of the building and were threatening to affect neighbouring houses, said Victoria deputy fire chief Paul Bruce.

“(Firefighters) did a great job at knocking down the flames in order initiate an interior attack,” he said.

The couple escaped from the house before the team of 17 firefighters arrived. One of the residents was suffering from smoke inhalation and burns and was taken to hospital.

Firefighters sprayed water through the windows of the house first, then went inside to extinguish the blaze. But the fire caused major damage to the house, leaving in uninhabitable, Bruce said.

Investigators will return to the burned-out house Tuesday to try determine what ignited the fire.
