Two hometown military members continue to add to their long list of career accomplishments.
Col. David Barr, who hails from Victoria, and retired navy captain Richard Harrison, from Cordova Bay, received meritorious service medals from Gov. Gen. David Johnston at a ceremony in Ottawa on Thursday.
The medal, presented to 28 members, recognizes Canadians whose "specific achievements have brought honour to the Canadian Forces and to Canada."
Barr was recognized for his leadership role in the military providing security during the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Vancouver. He is now a Canadian representative to the United Nations in New York City.
Harrison, who recently retired from military life, played a key role in the Royal Canadian Navy's centennial celebrations on the West Coast in 2010. He was instrumental in planning events such as the Freedom of the City parade in Victoria and the international fleet review.
