Intruder arrested after using garage door opener to break in to Saanich home

While six people slept, their home was broken into by a man who got inside by using a garage door opener stolen from a van in the driveway.

The residents of the home, in the 3200 block of Seaton St., discovered the intrusion in the morning, March 30, and called police.

The van, which had been parked outside the home, was missing, along with a number of small electronics taken from inside the home.

"We knew who was responsible and we were looking for him," said Saanich police Sgt. Dean Jantzen, declining to specify what investigative technique was used to identify the suspect.

A police officer spotted the man at Tillicum Centre around midnight Thursday.

John Harold Ellacott, 36, of Victoria, was charged with break and enter, theft and mischief.
