Kenneth Jacob Fenton will learn his fate on June 29 in Western Communities Court in Colwood.
The Langford man, who last month pleaded guilty to two charges relating to the April 2016 death of West Shore RCMP Const. Sarah Beckett, will be sentenced later this month on counts of impaired driving causing death and dangerous driving causing death.
The first charge comes with a maximum sentence of life in prison, but many factors will be considered in the decision.
“Sentencing decisions are based entirely upon the circumstances of the individual case, the relevant case law and the personal circumstances of the accused person,” Dan McLaughlin, communications counsel with the B.C. prosecution service, told reporters after Fenton’s guilty plea on May 25. “A guilty plea is a factor to be considered when the court is assessing the appropriate sentence, to be sure.”
Fenton is also facing charges relating to an incident that occured on May 22, 2016, just a few weeks after his fatal crash with Beckett’s police cruiser.
According to court records, he is charged with impaired driving causing bodily harm, causing an accident resulting in bodily harm and flight causing bodily harm after a single vehicle crash on Goldstream Heights Road in the Malahat area.
For those charges, he’s scheduled to appear in a Duncan courtroom on June 27.
