Newspaper carrier grabbed in Ten Mile Point area

Saanich police are looking to identify a man and determine his wellbeing after a physical confrontation with a newspaper carrier early Thursday morning.

The adult female carrier was delivering papers around 5:30 a.m. in the 2700-block of McColl Place in Ten Mile Point when she heard an unusual noise while walking up a driveway.

While the woman walked back toward the road, an unknown man appeared and grabbed her by the shoulders, pulling her in. She swung at the man with her flashlight before he let her go and ran off.

Police were called but were unable to locate the man.

“There are no specific indications regarding this man’s intent in terms of physical assault, or whether or not he may have had any intent of sexual assault or robbery,” said Staff Sgt. Scott Treble.

He added that police would like to contact him to determine whether he is homeless or may have mental health issues.

The assailant is described as white, 5’8” tall, with boney, veiny hands and foul body odour.

When last scene, he was wearing a black windbreaker with a hood.

The woman was not physically injured, but police say she was “very shaken up.”

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call police at 250-475-4321 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
