A woman was arrested and charged with mail theft on Thursday thanks to the help of a resident’s security cameras.

The West Shore RCMP were alerted to the theft of an unattended package left on the front porch of a View Royal home in the early afternoon of Dec. 21, according to a news release.

After reviewing security camera footage, an officer was able to recognise the woman as Barbara Joseph, 29, and passed on that information to the crime reduction unit. Officers from the unit then attended Joseph’s home with a search warrant on Dec. 23 and arrested her.

Joseph has since been charged with mail theft, failure to comply with a probation order, failure to comply with a release order and remains in custody.

“Each year, the West Shore RCMP reminds home owners to be extra vigilant when it comes to thefts of parcel,” read the release. “Despite the ongoing reminders, this is a reoccurring theme that is causing a lot of grief, especially during the holiday season.”
