READER RESULTS: 80 per cent of readers ready to scrap daylight savings

On Sunday, March 10 be ready to lose an hour of sleep

A mysterious phenomena will happen very early Sunday morning.

Suddenly, and with no modern explanation, 2 a.m. will suddenly jump ahead to 3 a.m.

Some may blame the ghosts of farmers past, some may blame the whims of politicians, others might categorize it in the same pile of unsolvable questions which includes “where did that other sock in the dryer go?” and “Why are avocados only ripe for two minutes?”

The reasoning behind Daylight Saving Time has also mystified most Black Press readers, most of whom voted in this week’s reader poll to axe the concept all together.

READER POLL: Would you like to get rid of Daylight Saving Time?

Over 80 per cent of readers who responded to our Wednesday poll opted to get rid of Daylight Saving, and they’re not alone.

A poll from BC Hydro found that 60 per cent of British Columbians have no idea why we even have Daylight Saving time (hint: it was instated to help conserve energy 100 years ago).

However, changes could be on the horizon.

Boundary–Similkameen MLA Linda Larson is preparing to re-introduce Bill M201 for a third time – calling on the legislature to put an end to the time change, an idea that is also being explored in Washington and California.

B.C. Premier John Horgan jumped aboard with the idea, announcing on Thursday that he’s written to the governors of California, Oregon and Washington to consider bills to opt out of switching the clock.

Whatever future changes may come, however, this year’s “spring forward” is scheduled per usual, so make sure to prepare yourself an extra cup of coffee for Monday morning.
