After four years as executive director of Our Place, Rev. Allen Tysick is stepping down, effective July 15.
Previously, Tysick was executive director of the Open Door, and oversaw plans for the new, expanded facility on Pandora Avenue in 2007.
“It is hard to imagine that 20 years have passed since I came to Victoria,” said Tysick, in a press release. “I have, with the strength of Christ, led the organization through so many changes – and done so with both tears and laughter.”
The Our Place board has struck a transitional committee to search for a new executive director.
“He will certainly be missed and leaves big shoes to fill – not only at Our Place but in the community in general,” said Don Storch, chair of Our Place.
Tysick has tirelessly advocated for more funding to open the drop-in centre for longer hours. Under his leadership, opening hour was changed from 9a.m. to 7 a.m., five days a week – but he continues to push for evening and weekend opening.
The United Church minister starts his work days by 6 a.m., by delivering coffee and treats to people sleeping on the streets. It’s the type of work for which he wants more time, he told media earlier this week.
Our Place is a drop-in centre for the poor, offering meals, clothing, showers, internet and some housing.
