Saanich police hand out nearly two dozen tickets to distracted dirvers in two-hour blitz

Drivers talking on their cell phones, drivers not wearing a seatbelt and some drivers doing both were slapped with tickets Monday afternoon in a blitz by Saanich police patrol and traffic safety officers.

Between noon and 2 p.m., police handed out 23 violation tickets to drivers at the Uptown curve that connects the Trans-Canada Highway and Douglas Street.

"We are concerned with these numbers, given the amount of publicity this legislation has received, that this problem still persists," Sgt. Dean Jantzen said. "We are vigorously looking for distracted drivers because we know they are out there."

Ten tickets were issued to distracted drivers, 10 were issued for failing to wear a seatbelt and two drivers received one of each. Three drivers were given tickets for failing to yield at an intersection.

Police will be ramping up traffic enforcement through February looking for distracted drivers.
