Saanich school district teachers plan ‘day of action’

Teachers on Saanich Peninsula might demonstrate, rally as contract negotiations remain halted

Teachers plan to work a strict schedule in the Saanich school district today, Feb. 27.

“The request to teachers is that they treat the day as a bell-to-bell day,” said Sean Hayes, president of the Saanich Teachers’ Association. That means teachers were expected to show up at the bell this morning, and head home at the final bell this afternoon.

“The second element [is] we’ve asked all teaching staff to get together at lunch and have a union meeting to see where we are and where we’re going,” Hayes said. “The plan is after the last bell of the day, the teachers would participate in some sort of demonstration.”

That action could be a teacher heading out front of his or her school with a sign, or flagging down and chatting with parents, or participating in a rally planned for the legislature downtown.

“It’s not a picket line, it’s just an information demonstration,” Hayes said.

Education Minister George Abbott announced Thursday, Feb. 23, that he intends to prepare back-to-work legislation next week to end the job action with B.C.’s 40,000 teachers that began last September.
