Saanich voters can mail-in their vote for municipal election

Snowbirds, students studying abroad and anyone physically unable to get out and vote will be able to participate in November's municipal election.

Snowbirds, students studying abroad and anyone physically unable to get out and vote will be able to participate in November's municipal election.

Saanich council approved the use of mail-in ballots Monday night.

In the past, Saanich tried to address the issue by using mobile polling stations, which allowed staff members to set up at care facilities on election day.

Councillors on Monday unanimously supported the change, stressing that it will need to be accompanied by a thorough information campaign so residents know the option is available.

Saanichites will have to apply, in advance, for a mail-in ballot, which will be sent out on Nov. 9. It will then be the responsibility of each individual voter to ensure their ballot is returned by 8 p.m. on election night (Nov. 19).
