Seat belt use saves head-on crash drivers

Man loses consciousness at the wheel, swerves into oncoming lane

Two drivers narrowly escaped serious injuries after a head-on collision, caused when one of the drivers blacked out.

The incident occurred around 2:15 p.m. Thursday in the 5500-block of West Saanich Road.

A man in his late 30s lost consciousness as he drove south and crossed the centre line into oncoming traffic. The other driver, a woman in her mid 20s, was forced to brake and swerve, but the vehicles collided.

The woman suffered an injury to her left shoulder and was transported to hospital.

The man, who police determined was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol, suffered no injuries, Saanich police Const. Matt Cawsey said.

“At this time it is unknown what caused him to lose consciousness,” he said.

More serious injury was prevented due to both drivers wearing their seat belts, Cawsey added.
