The Vancouver Island Seals hockey team plays south of the Malahat for the first time in two years this weekend.

The female midget AAA team, which selects the cream of female hockey players from across Vancouver Island, is led by two players from the Saanich Peninsula. Yannick Truter and Marlene Roberts, two former Peninsula Eagles stand-outs from Sidney, are now the Seals’ captain and vice captain respectively.

The Seals select players from Port Hardy to North Saanich and compete in the BC AAA Female Hockey League. Despite leading the pack earlier in the season, they are now involved in a tussle with the Fraser Valley Rush and Northern Capitals for second place.

Coach Chris Atchison is happy with the group’s progress. “We always aspire to be better, but we’re really proud of the players.”

Atchison notes that playing at the Panorama is a rare opportunity for hockey fans to see two excellent local players in action. “It’s a great opportunity to see the next generation of elite athletes play,” he said.

The Seals play at the Shawnigan Lake Arena on Friday and Sunday, with the important Saanich Peninsula game sandwiched between the two, on Saturday, March 9 at the Panorama Recreation Centre.

Truter and Roberts come from a proud line of hockey talent with many Seals players going on to play hockey at varsity level and some being selected for the Canadian national team. Both players have won championships before in their careers, but are hoping to put in good performances on home ice.

Puck drop is at 3:20 p.m. on Saturday, March 9 at the Panorama Recreation Centre.
