Thief steals $10,000 worth of smokes and lottery tickets in Saturday smash-and-grab

The suspect is between 5’6” and 5’8” and wore a black hoodie, black gloves, blue jeans and a black bandana covering his or her face.

A lone thief made off with an estimated $10,000 in cigarettes and lottery tickets after a smash and grab in Saanich early Saturday morning.

An alarm company alerted police around 5:30 a.m., about the break-in at the Fairway Market on McKenzie Avenue at Cedar Hill Road.

The store was entered through a broken window  and “a substantial haul of cigarette cartons and individual cigarette packages were stolen along with numerous books of lottery tickets,” police said Saturday afternoon.

Video surveillance shows a single individual entering the store. The suspect is between 5’6” and 5’8” and wore a black hoodie with an emblem on the hood, black gloves, blue jeans and a black bandana covering his or her face.

Police are asking the public to report any suspicious sales or transactions involving cigarettes or lottery tickets by calling the department at 250 475-4321.
