Thieves target insurance papers

Thieves entering cars looking for your belongings have a target of a different sort: your insurance documents.

Saanich police put out the warning to residents this week after three reports from the high Quadra neighbourhood that insurance papers were stolen from vehicles overnight between Friday and Saturday.

Sgt. Dean Jantzen said all the vehicles had been left unlocked, and suggests locking your doors is at least one way to protect yourself.

The concern for police, however, is what thieves are potentially doing with the documents. They say they are concerned that fraud-related activities could result.

“You’re obligated to have insurance papers in the car at all times, but I suggest you have a copy of them, just in case,” he said. “But there’s a warning message to anyone who may have banking details in with your insurance papers. That could have your name and address and potentially an account number.”

Anyone with information on these incidents or who may have fallen victim to a similar crime is asked to call Saanich police at 250-475-4321.
