For seven hours Tuesday, police decked out in emergency response gear, including helmets, bulletproof vests and firearms, surrounded at apartment building.

At 2:30 p.m., the incident came to a close, with two men taken into custody. One was a 28-year-old man, believed to have had a gun. The other, a 29-year-old man.

A men had barricaded themselves within a suite at 1721 Quadra St.

The incident began at 7 p.m. Monday when a woman called Victoria police to report a domestic assault at the Quadra Street address. Police attended and helped the woman get to safety. It is not known whether she was injured.

Investigation of that assault brought officers back to Quadra Street at 7:15 a.m. Tuesday, said Sgt. Grant Hamilton. The 28-year-old man is the alleged attacker from the incident the night before. He has a history of violence and run-ins with police.

Police tape and barricades rerouted traffic, cyclists and pedestrians away from the building for safety, Hamilton said. An emergency response team officer and an officer with a canine unit were posted outside the building for hours, along with several police cruisers with flashing lights, ambulances and fire trucks.

The 28-year-old man could be charged with assault and forcible confinement, relating to the domestic incident. The other man was released without charges.
