WATCH: Car blows stop sign in Oak Bay

Police release video to raise alarm over dangerous driving habits

Oak Bay police hope the power of video and social media will make drivers think harder after sharing a clip of a car blatantly cruising through a stop sign.

“I’m not sure what it’s going to take but we have greatly increased our enforcement efforts,” said Deputy Chief Ray Bernoties. “The traffic issues in Oak Bay are brought to our attention by frustrated residents on a daily basis. Traffic was also identified by the community as one of our top priorities.”

He also posted the video, sent in by a concerned resident, on Twitter with a similar message.

”This video shows a car blatantly running a stop sign. It should concern everyone. Perhaps more concerning though is that this isn’t a rare occurrence. I’ve almost gone over the hoods of a few cars when I’m jogging in Oak Bay and crossing legally at crosswalks,” he said.

He’s previously suggested on social media that if a driver kills a child, he might have them come and tell the parents.

“I realize that sounds shockingly harsh but I need people to realize that there are very tragic outcomes to this selfish behaviour. I’m confident that coming with me to do an NOK (next of kin) notification would change their behavior. If harsh words can turn the light on for some drivers and therefore reduce the chances of someone being hurt or killed in Oak Bay, so be it.”
