Woman, 88, dies after being struck by out-of-control vehicle in Saanich

Elderly vicitm out for a walk near Tyndall and Hillcrest avenues around 3 p.m. on Sunday

An out-of-control car created a scene of chaos at the intersection of Tyndall and Hillcrest Avenues on Sunday and led to the death of an elderly Saanich woman.

A 43-year-old Saanich woman was driving a 2009 Toyota Corolla when the vehicle suddently crossed the centre line and hit an 88-year-old woman who was out for a walk in the neighbourhood.

The car flipped and eventually settled overturned. Both the pedestrian and driver were taken to hospital, where the elderly woman was pronounced dead.

“Investigators are still working on the file to determine the cause of the collision,” said Saanich police Sgt. Steve Eassie.

“Until that investigation is completed, it cannot be definitively determined what caused this tragic accident.”

Eassie said police are investigating whether or not a medical incident may have led to the crash. The B.C. Coroners Service will now be working with Saanich police to sort out what happened.

The name of the victim was not available at the News' deadline.
