Accident waiting to happen

Resident said drive-thru traffic creating hazard along Shelbourne Street

I have written to Saanich Police to express my concern over the accident-waiting-to-happen at the Shelbourne Street location of Tim Hortons.

Despite a large, clearly visible sign requesting drivers ‘Please do not block the driveway’, this driveway is blocked constantly throughout the day.

Traffic heading south on Shelbourne often cannot use the curb lane due to the lineup of vehicles on Shelbourne waiting their opportunity to turn into the drive-thru. This congestion is compounded by vehicles waiting to turn left off Shelbourne and into that same driveway, while long-suffering drivers wait their turn to leave the same area.

The whole situation is further complicated by drivers with a clear death wish attempting to turn left onto Shelbourne as they exit this location. I cannot tell you how many near accidents I have observed, some involving pedestrians who unwittingly add an additional element of risk to the traffic scenario.

This morning I watched as a mother with stroller wove in between the incredible congestion of vehicles.  This was the last straw for me – something needs to be done about the traffic flow (and I use the term very loosely).

In my opinion, current signage should include threat of ticketing; an additional sign should be added, clearly visible to cars coming south along Shelbourne; a ‘no left turn’ sign also needs to be added for vehicles exiting the strip mall on to Shelbourne; police presence and/or ticketing for even one day after increased signage would be helpful.

This is a dangerous traffic situation.  Something proactive needs to occur before an accident takes place.
