LETTER: America more than just the U.S.A.

I am in complete agreement with the political observations regarding the decline of the United States of America. (Saanich News editorial, Dec. 13). The concern that it could happen to Canada is reasonable. If we wish to be on a different path let’s begin by avoiding language which bundles us together.

I am in complete agreement with the political observations regarding the decline of the United States of America. (Saanich News editorial, Dec. 13). The concern that it could happen to Canada is reasonable. If we wish to be on a different path let’s begin by avoiding language which bundles us together.

“America” is not a country, and no mater how often we use words which seem to describe it as such that will not make it so. It is not “America’s descent…” that this editorial refers to but that of just one of the 18 distinct and independent countries of the American continent, the United States of America. Let’s strengthen and encourage those distinctions by using language which respects that independence. The United States is not America. America is not descending.
