Re the article ‘Fawn dies after crashing through house window’ in the Aug. 11 Saanich News by Travis Paterson.

Travis may be astonished to know that there were no deer in the Gordon Head district between the years 1942 and 1960.

I grew up in the area during those years, as a boy playing in the woods of 10 Mile Point, Queenswood and the Hudson Bay woods (now the UVic grounds), went to school at CedarHill elementary and the original Mt. Douglas High and never saw a trace of any wild animals except red squirrels and raccoons. The little indigenous red squirrels have been eradicated by the invasive grey squirrels.

To see a deer one had to go to the Highlands, Sooke or Malahat areas.

They are now an invasive species uncontrolled by any predator.
