LETTER: Saanich must recognize importance of ecologically sensitive areas

The article in the Saanich News, “ Subdivision planned for area once protected by EDPA ” reminded me of the importance of council speaking and make decisions in the best interests of its constituents. Saanich must prioritize and protect areas of beauty and sanctuary for the birds and owls and bats and a plethora of other wildlife for future generations.

The article in the Saanich News, “Subdivision planned for area once protected by EDPA” reminded me of the importance of council speaking and make decisions in the best interests of its constituents. Saanich must prioritize and protect areas of beauty and sanctuary for the birds and owls and bats and a plethora of other wildlife for future generations. Is it in the best interests of Saanich to develop an ecologically sensitive area that was protected until a short time ago? Surely not without significant environmental review and public consultation; anything less is short-term thinking.

All living things are connected in a web of life. This is not romantic thinking. This is sound and scientific and thankfully there is a growing realization that we need to care for what we have been given. We have a responsibility to leave to future generations what we ourselves have enjoyed. Protecting green space is not an extreme or luxury notion.

Let’s join together, speak up and find ways to keep our green spaces green. And let’s elect councilors who are willing to recognize the importance of, and ensure protection, ecologically sensitive areas and biodiversity.
