LETTER: Taxes should be based on services

Once again we have seen a large increase in assessments, which will likely translate to higher taxes. Surely these should be a reflection of services that are provided by the municipalities.

Once again we have seen a large increase in assessments, which will likely translate to higher taxes. Surely these should be a reflection of services that are provided by the municipalities.

I look at my road. The sparse lighting is 1980s sodium, there are no street drains, an open trench captures runoff, the paving is full of potholes and cracks, there are no sidewalks, there is zero maintenance of the overgrown street borders, overhead wires hang everywhere, and a police vehicle is a once a year sight. At times it seems we are third world. Certainly the taxes aren’t.

The only tangible return for thousands in taxes is a library card. This is a beautiful frustrating place to live.
