Liberals, NDP still alive in Saanich-Gulf Islands riding

Re: May vies for place alongside John A. (News, April 6)

I am writing to take issue with the assertion made that the federal election in Saanich-Gulf Islands is between Elizabeth May of the Green Party and Gary Lunn of the Conservatives.

A Green candidate has never won more than 17 per cent of the vote in Saanich-Gulf Islands, and in the last election the Green Party candidate won only 10 per cent.

I was the NDP candidate who ran in Saanich-Gulf Islands in 2004, a campaign where another Green candidate was hyped to win and become the first Green MP. So I am totally bemused by the repetition of these tactics by the Greens. Ms. May has declared that she is against strategic voting, except apparently where it serves her own purposes.

The Greens’ claim that there is only a two-way race in this riding does not stand up to scrutiny. And while Elizabeth May asks for fair coverage at the national level, I am asking for equal and fair coverage in Saanich-Gulf Islands.
