Mayor’s LRT thoughts are not forward-thinking enough

New transit taxes for light rail deferred (News, July 4)

I don’t often find myself taking opposite positions from my mayor, Frank Leonard, but on this issue I am.

He is totally wrong about only taxing future users of the proposed LRT system. This kind of thinking is one of the reasons why we are in the situation that we are today. We have failing infrastructure everywhere and an empty bank account to maintain and/or overhaul it as needed, not just when we have the cash.

This is an investment in our community and we should start to save for it today.

It will be expensive, for sure, and we will be in a better position going forward if we have the largest down-payment possible to get it going.
