Braves edge Gens for wildcard win, enter VIJHL playoffs

The Saanich Braves host Game 2 of first round series against Campbell River Storm at Pearkes Arena Wednesday

The Saanich Braves visit Campbell River tonight for Game 1 of their best-of-seven first round series against the Campbell River Storm at Pearkes Arena on Wednesday night.

The Braves played Game 1 in Campbell River on Tuesday (results were past press time).

On Sunday the Braves booked their spot in the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League playoffs with a 3-2 win over the Oceanside Generals at Pearkes Arena.

The single game wildcard match is staged between the last place teams in the south and north divisions.

Brandon Fushimi scored the game-winner in the third period to push the Braves into the playoffs and elminate the Gens. Braves goalie Riley Mathieson stopped 19 shots, including 10 in the third period, to get the win. Braves rookie Dale McCabe scored the game’s opening goal in the first period and earned the primarty assist on Evan Horvath’s goal in the second period.

Puck drop is 7 p.m. tonight at Pearkes Arena. Game 3 is Friday in Campbell River and Game 4 is 4:30 p.m. at Pearkes on Sunday.
