Braves return to Pearkes Tuesday, lead Islanders 3-1 in series

The Saanich Braves scored three goals in the third period on Monday night to win 4-2 over the Kerry Park Islanders and move up 3-1 in the VIJHL first-round playoff series.

The win opens the door to a series-clinching win on home ice Tuesday night as the Braves host the Islanders, 7:30 p.m. at Pearkes.

Braves forward Jordan Strandund scored in the first period but Kerry Park took a 2-1 lead into the third period on goals by Ty Smith and Cordell Boyko.

Two minutes into the third period Kyle Mace tied it for the Braves. Hayden Visscher scored to break the tie and Trevor Owens scored the foruth goal with three minutes left.

Braves goalie and 2017-18 VIJHL MVP Riley Mathieson earned his third win by stopping 32 of 43 shots. In four games Mathieson carries an impressive .959 save percentage.

In the other VIJHL series Nanaimo Buccaneers swept the Oceanside Generals in four games, Campbell River Storm lead Peninsula Panthers 3-1 and the Westshore Wolves and Victoria Cougars are tied 2-2, playing Wednesday night at Q Centre.
