The Camosun Chargers won its first national silver medal in women’s volleyball, falling in four sets to the Lakeland Rustlers in the CCAA final on Saturday.
A big win on Friday put the Chargers into the final, defeating the Grand Prairie Wolves in the semifinal at PISE.
The Rustlers upended the Chargers in the Saturday night final, 25-20, 25-20, 17-25 and 26-24.
Despite dropping the first two sets the Chargers found new life after a third set victory and had opportunities to push to a fifth and final set, but the Rustlers defence stood tall.
Katie Fetting led the Chargers offensive attack with a match high 16 kills while player of the match nominee, Michelle Zygmunt, tallied 15 kills, three aces and 14 digs.
Fetting was named a First Team All-Star. The silver medal is the Chargers’ best finish in school history at the CCAA national championship. Nanaimo’s V.I. Mariners won bronze.
The Chargers men also qualified for the volleyball nationals, falling in the bronze semifinal to host Fanshawe Falcons in three straight sets 25-21, 25-23 and 25-20.
