In a tournament filled with unknown competition, the Oak Bay Bays senior boys basketball team narrowly missed a bronze medal at the third annual Vikes Alumni Senior Boys Basketball Invitational, Dec. 28 to 30.

Vancouver College edged the locals 81-76.

The first two rounds of the tournament had the Bays up against out-of-province teams. They started with a commanding 116 - 65 win over Regina’s Luther College, before an 86 - 76 semi-final loss to Cambridge Ontario’s St. Benedict. The gold medal game had St. Benedict up against Edmonton’s Harry Ainlay High School, with 800 people in attendance. Harry Ainlay went on to take home the gold, 75 - 70.

Saanich’s Claremont Secondary was the only other Victoria team participating this year. Like the Bays, Claremont’s first two games were against out-of-province teams. They lost to eventual champions Harry Ainlay in the first game, and Kirkland WA’s Juanita in game two. Claremont finished the tournament with a 86-58 win over Kelowna’s Rutland Secondary.

Joseph Reyes won Claremont’s team award, while Ewan Mackenzie took home the honour for Oak Bay.
