PCS girls win Island junior basketball title

School into “new territory” with trip to basketball provincials

The Pacific Christian Pacers set a new benchmark in junior girls basketball with an Island title and a trip to the provincials.

“This is new territory, this type of success is new for our school,” said athletic director John Stewart.

Last month the Pacers won the Island championship at Wellington in a 45-41 win over Cowichan. (Claremont won bronze by defeating Ballenas 45-41 in overtime.)

Addy Tupas-Singh was part of the strong PCS attack, and was named the Island tournament MVP. PCS’ Kailey Demetrius and Claremont’s Reese Manns were named to the Island all-tournament team.

PCS used a strong outside shooting game, combined with their rebounding, to edge Ballenas in the semifinals 58-38. P

The Pacers doubled down on their committment by temporarily tattooing the word “tenacious” on each of their arms.

With under a minute to go and leading by a bucket, PCS player Jenna deGreeff drove the hoop and drained a floater to make it a four-point lead, icing the Island championship. A

PCS finished 14th out of 24 teams at the provincials in Langley, earning the most sportsmanlike team for their effort.
