A Saanich product who honed his hockey skills in Greater Victoria will play at a heavily scouted event in early February.
Sean Ramsay, who currently plays for the Johnstown Tomahawks, will compete in the North American Hockey League’s Top Prospects Tournament in Pennsylvania on Feb. 7 and 8. The showcase attracts scouts from just about every NHL team and NCAA Division I school.
With 10 goals and 19 assists through 37 games this season, Ramsay ranks as Johnstown’s third-highest point-getter in his first year in the league. The 20-year-old also had stints with the B.C. Hockey League’s Victoria Grizzlies, Surrey Eagles and Cowichan Valley Capitals.
The forward also spent several years at the Pacific Coast Hockey Academy and his time at the Langford school included breaking a Canadian Sports School Hockey League single-season scoring record.
Ramsay will join teammates Jacob Badal and Stephen Kyrkostas in representing the league’s East Divison at the tournament. The trio has a combined total of 98 points this season. The Johnstown Tomahawks, in a release, highlighted how 46 of those points are assists, which the team said is a testament to each of the players’ play-making ability.

The NAHL is USA Hockey’s second-tier junior hockey league, behind the United States Hockey League.
“The NAHL Top Prospects Tournament is the most unique event we host because its sole purpose is to provide those players that are still uncommitted a great opportunity to play in front of hundreds of NCAA and NHL scouts for a chance to make a great impression and earn an NCAA commitment or get drafted into the NHL,” said NAHL commissioner and president Mark Frankenfeld, in a release.
NAHL players accounted for a total of 395 NCAA commitments last season, including a record 293 committing to NCAA Division I programs.
Each team will play two games at the prospect tournament, which is being held at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex – the Pittsburgh Penguins’ practice facility.
