Saanich racer wins twice at Monterey, ready for Sonoma

Saanich auto racer Bill Okell will spend Canada Day south of the border competing in the Sports Car Club of America race at Sonoma

Saanich auto racer Bill Okell will spend Canada Day south of the border where he’s qualifying for a strong starting position in this weekend’s Sports Car Club of America race at Sonoma Raceway, north of San Francisco.

Okell is in the midst of a successful season, having won two races in the NASCAR Sprint Cup series at Monterey in Laguna Seca four weeks ago.

Okell will race in two events on Sonoma’s 2.5-mile hillside circuit, Saturday and Sunday.

A good finish this weekend will leave him in a strong position to qualify for the year-end Pacific Coast Road Racing Championships, in late October, at another NASCAR track, Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif. (northeast of Los Angeles).
