It was a successful weekend for the University of Victoria's soccer program as both sides emerged with lopsided wins.
The men's team hosted the University of Saskatchewan on Sept. 15 and shutout the Huskies 3-0 at Centennial Stadium.
The Vikes scored twice in the first half, with both strikes coming off the feet of Alex Moody. The home team added to its lead in the closing moments of the match as Takin Keshavarz scored his first goal as a Vike off a kick from the middle of the box in the 90th minute. The 3-0 win marks the fifth shutout for UVic's defence through the first seven contests of the 2024 campaign.
The women's soccer team rolled to a 4-1 win in Abbotsford on Sept. 15 over the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades.
The Vikes put two on the board in the opening 45 minutes thanks to goals from Ruby Nicholas and Taiya Scorey. Nicholas got on the score sheet again in the second when a handball by the Cascades gave her a penalty kick that she sent past the keeper and into the bottom right of the goal. Minutes after the Cascades made it 3-1 in the 68th minute, Scorey matched her teammate by netting her second goal of the day off a kick from 40 yards out.
The UVic men's and women's teams each sit in second place in the Canada West conference's Pacific division.
The men's squad will start out on a four game road stint beginning in Lethbridge next weekend, while the women's team will visit Thompson Rivers University on Friday.
