Vikes swimmers visit Comox for Island regionals, basketball women on a roll

Vikes swimming wracked up podium finishes at the Vancouver Island Regional Championship over the weekend.

It was a successful start to 2017 for Vikes swimming as the team wracked up podium finishes at both the Vancouver Island Regional Championship over the weekend.

At the Vancouver Island Regional Championship, second-year Vike Kara Wilson made her U Sports qualifying time in the 200-metre breastroke with a time of 2:36.81.

Although winning his event in a time of 2:05.27, third-year Vike Sebastien Michaud just missed his U Sports standard time by a slim .06 of a second, with fellow varsity teammate Thomas van Maren coming in second at 2:09.01.

In the women’s 15-and-over 800-metre freestyle Anna Letkeman came in first place with a time of 9:32.73.

Vike Kara Wilson topped off her U Sports qualifying time from prelims by taking off an additional one-tenth of a second at finals to come in first place overall, with rookie teammate Andrea Farmer finishing in second with a time of 2:41.98. UVic’s Juliana Bartemucci took in the hometown advantage as she touched 3rd with a time of 2:43.97.

In the 100-metre butterfly for the 15 & Over men, UVic Vikes varsity swimmer Bryce Molder came in first at 59.95, and fellow Vike Justin Howe finished in second with a time of 1:00.76.

UVic Vikes women’s basketball team undefeated since holiday break

The UVic Vikes are on a four game win streak - perfect in 2017 - following a pair of wins over the UBC Okanagan Heat in Kelowna over the weekend.

The Vikes won 75-52 on Saturday night and 78-67 on Friday.

“It was a good all-around performance and a good team win [Saturday],” said Vikes head coach Dani Sinclair. “We were able to get momentum right off the bat and we kept it throughout most of the game.”

The Vikes improve their Canada West regular season record to 8-4.

Rebounding was again a difference maker in the Saturday game, as the Vikes pulled down 41 to the Heat’s 27. Partly because of this, Victoria outscored UBCO 34-22 in the paint.The Vikes were up 46-24 at half-time.

Nicole Karstein led the Vikes offence, with a game-high 17 points. Jenna Bugiardini put up another 15 and finished one rebound shy of a double-double. Jenna Krug also put up double digits, finishing with 12 points.

Saturday was a differnt story as the Vikes and Heat exchanged the lead 19 times.

Karstein led the way Friday with 22 points and 10 rebounds for the double digit accolade.

The Vikes host the U Sports Women's Basketball Championship March 9 to 12 at CARSA.

The Vikes men’s basketball team also swept the Heat this weekend winning 75-65 Saturday and 81-46 Friday.

Grant Sitton led the Vikes with 24 points on Saturday. Behind him was Justin Kinnear, who earned a double-double with 18 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Taylor Montgomery-Stinson also finished in double digits, with 12 points.

Scott Kellum paced the Vikes with 28 on Friday.

The Vikes are at home this weekend to the Lethbridge Pronghorns at CARSA, Friday and Saturday nights, Jan. 20-21.

Tip off is 6 p.m. Friday for the women’s and 8 p.m. for the men. Then it’s 5 and 7 p.m. on Saturday.
