Greater Victoria Flower Count launches in Hatley Garden

The 44th annual competition to see which region has the greatest flower count is almost underway

The 44th annual competition to see which region has the greatest flower count is ready to bloom.

The Greater Victoria Flower Count challenges local communities in a friendly competition to see who has the most flowers.

Destination Greater Victoria launched the count, that runs March 6 to 13, in the gardens of Hatley Castle at Royal Roads on Monday morning.

The event brought out representatives from Destination Greater Victoria, The Butchart Gardens, Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce, Royal Roads University and Rob Martin, Mayor of Colwood.

Organizers also used the event to announce the North American Garden Tourism Conference, which has the theme of “taking garden tourism to the next level.”

There are 22 speakers from the UK, Scotland, South Korea, Italy, the U.S. and Canada slated for the event, which will be held in Greater Victoria for first time, from Nov. 3 to 5.

In last year’s flower count, 3.4 billion blossoms were reported for Greater Victoria. The City of Colwood, at 2.25 billion, won bloomingest for the fifth straight year.

The event intends to draw attention to the milder weather on the Island at a time when the rest of the country is still taking time to warm up. Flower counts can be submitted from March 6 to 13, at flowercount.com.
