About 30 volunteers with the Friends of Mount Douglas Park and some Saanich Parks staff planted more than 100 native plants on Sunday.
The plants were placed to help restore Douglas Creek spawning beds and protect it from further storm surge erosion. Fast flowing runoff from the roofs and roads of Gordon Head wash out Douglas Creek during heavy rains.
Coun. Dean Murdock, also chair of the Saanich Parks, Trails and Recreation Committee, accepted a $10,000 cheque on behalf of Saanich. The money was raised by the Friends of Mount Doug, funded mostly by grants from the Pacific Salmon Foundation.
Significant work restoring Douglas Creek as a salmon-bearing artery is now in its sixth year.
