Why a carbon-free economy is taking forever

Feb. 1 RON Talk focus on carbon-free economy and homophobia

This month’s Royal Oak Neighbourhood Talks event Wednesday night, Feb. 1 at Crumsby’s Cafe.

First up is Dr. Lynda Gagné from UVic giving her talk, Public Policy Tools to Shift to a Carbon-free Economy and Why We are Slow to Adopt Them.

Gagné joined the school of public administration at UVic as an Assistant Professor in 2001. She had previously worked as an accountant in the non-profit sector and in government.

Her current research and teaching interests include sustainable water policy, ecological and climate economics, economic evaluation, public financial management, and tobacco control policy.

The second speaker will be Ryan James presenting on Homophobia in B.C.

James spent nearly a decade as a gay youth advocate, working with various levels of government and schools to implement policies to protect LGBTQ youth. He spent nine years speaking in schools across B.C. about homophobia and discrimination.

Last month was an intimate presentation by Times Colonist editor in chief Dave Obee, on the challenges modern newspapers face and, UVic law professor Rebecca Johnson on the outcome of the Truth and Reconciliation report and the progress, or lack of, on its 94 calls to action.
