Seventy new affordable homes are coming for families and seniors in Saanich.

The 70 new affordable rental homes at 856 Nigel Ave. will address the needs and lack of housing for people with disabilities in Saanich, as the next stage of the Nigel Valley housing redevelopment gets underway.

Mayor Dean Murdock says the development represents a significant investment in creating homes and supports for people in the community in order to live and participate in Saanich.

“These are badly-needed homes and residences and supports that are going to be operated by a variety and a collection of organizations,” said Murdock. “It’s a major benefit to our community to have that kind of investment come from certain levels of government and Saanich is happy to support the development of that process.”

The homes, operated by the Greater Victoria Housing Society (GVHS), will also have office space in the building.

The building is part of the Nigel Valley housing redevelopment, which will provide approximately 800 new homes for a range of people in need. With a $250-million funding commitment, Nigel Valley is the largest investment in affordable housing in Vancouver Island’s history.

Phase 1 of the redevelopment started construction in June 2022 and construction is expected to be complete by early 2026.
