Major crimes evidence search closes regional trail over night: Saanich police

Saanich police yet to reveal nature of the investigation on the trail near McKenzie Avenue

Police aren’t disclosing many details on what kind of investigation closed a busy segment of the Galloping Goose trail in Saanich overnight, reopening March 12 just before noon.

Saanich police alerted residents of the closure shortly before 7 a.m. when traffic on the path is traditionally busier. The area, however, closed around 6:30 p.m. Monday, for a search of the area for potential evidence related to a Major Crimes Unit investigation.

There was a preliminary search, including the use of police dogs, but as darkness set, police opted to hold the area, according to a news release from Saanich Police Department.

“At daybreak, with the support of the Greater Victoria Public Safety Unit, a thorough search and canvas of the area was conducted. That has now concluded,” said Jason Hallman, communications advisor for Saanich police. “Going forward, we will provide more information on this file as needed.”
