South-bound traffic slowed on Blanshard Street by Uptown with a five-car pile-up on Tuesday (July 14) at about 1:30 p.m. One person was attended to by paramedics and firefighters spread fire retardant but those involved were otherwise unscathed.

A chain of five cars were caught in a rear ending pile up on Blanshard Street southbound between Uptown and Saanich Plaza at about 1 p.m. on Tuesday (July 14). There were no serious injuries, though one person was transported by ambulance to Victoria General Hospital, said Sgt. Steve Eassie of Saanich Police.

The pile-up happened in the middle of the five lane road when the first vehicle slowed to a stop and was hit by vehicle number two immediately. A third and fourth car were able to stop in time. However, a fifth car was not, which drove into the back of the fourth car, and created a chain reaction where the fourth car hit the third car.

“It is an area that features increased volume but generally we find most traffic (incidents) are caused by people following too closely or not paying attention to the vehicle,” Eassie said.

Saanich Fire applied sand and fire retardant but the situation was otherwise minimal.
