‘Human activity’ likely cause of fire on Mount Manuel Quimper

A one-hectare forest fire on the south face of Mount Manuel Quimper yesterday was likely human caused, say officials.

The fire started at about 1 p.m. Tuesday and doubled in size in about 30 minutes.

Firefighters called it a “rank two” fire, meaning it is a slow moving surface fire.

And while the fire is small by forest fire standards, the terrain is causing firefighters difficulties. Three helicopters and air water tanker were used to help suppress the blaze.

More than 25 firefighters from Sooke Fire Rescue, Wildfire B.C. and the Capital Regional District were on the ground fighting the fire.

The fire was partially contained last night. Firefighters will return this morning to begin mop-up operations. No air support will be used today unless needed.

Smoke from the fire could be seen for kilometres around the Sooke region.

The fire did not threaten any homes. Sea to Sea Regional Park’s parking lot is closed and park users are asked to stay away from the fire area.

Mount Manuel Quimper is a popular hiking destination in the Sooke Hills, east of Sooke.
