West Shore RCMP nabbed a wannabe samurai in Colwood on Thursday (May 25) after someone was denied entry on a BC Transit bus.

Someone was boarding a bus near the intersection of Goldstream Road and Sooke Road in Colwood on Thursday when the bus driver told him he couldn’t get on with a sword, according to a police statement.

Rebuffed and seemingly feeling wronged, a person smashed one of the outside windows before fleeing on foot.

Police cornered a suspect in a nearby parking lot and made an arrest.

Police says officers also found a replica handgun. While police determined the sword was plastic, it was used in a fashion that appeared real, police spokesperson Cpl. Nancy Saggar said in a statement.

A suspect was arrested on weapons charges and for mischief under $5,000. He was also under a court release order which barred him from possessing any weapons including firearms.

“We want to thank the bus driver for calling police right away, their actions were instrumental in keeping the passengers onboard safe,” said Saggar.

A 19-year-old male who lives in Saanich was arrested and is being held in custody before appearing in before court on Friday (May 26).
