Saanich workers' union lands contract

The union representing some 1,200 employees in Saanich ratified a collective agreement last week

The union representing some 1,200 employees in Saanich ratified a collective agreement last week that includes a 7.25 per cent wage increase over four years.

The agreement for the members of CUPE local 2011 expires Dec. 31, 2015.

“We’re very pleased with the security of a four-year agreement. That’s going to give Saanich the ability to move forward and make plans,” said John Horsfield, CUPE national staff representative.

The 7.25-per-cent increase is in line with other municipal unions in the province, Horsfield said. Municipalities are not covered by the province’s co-operative gains mandate that saw most public sector unions agree to an overall four per cent increase over four years.

CUPE local 2011 represents most municipal employees in Saanich, except police officers and firefighters.
