UPDATE: Police identify woman found dead behind Esquimalt sport centre

Victoria police, Coroner's Service, investigating suspicious death

Victoria police identified Nadine Janice Marshall

Police are still looking for details around the movements of a woman found dead in Esquimalt last Friday.

VicPD and the B.C. Coroners Service identified Nadine Janice Marshall, 48, of Victoria, as the person whose body was found 3:30 a.m. Aug. 3 in an area behind the Archie Browning Sports Centre.

Detectives are looking to speak with anyone who may have had contact, or knew the whereabouts of Marshall from Thursday night, Aug. 2 to the early morning hours of Aug. 3.

“There was no obvious signs of trauma,” said VicPD spokesman Mike Tucker, adding that police consider the death suspicious. “It wasn’t evident that this death occurred from natural causes.”

The body was found in the parking lot behind the arena, towards Lyall Street.

One Lyall Street resident woke to the sound of sirens.

“There were probably four to five cop cars,” the neighbour, who asked not to be identified, said. That grew to 10 cars by 7:30 a.m. “They (police) were really onto it hard.”

The block surrounding the sports centre, and some adjacent businesses were were closed until about 10 a.m. Friday.

“It’s really important for us to preserve the area and collect as much evidence as possible,” Tucker said. “We had a wide area closed off to collect evidence and we’re currently canvassing neighbours and the neighbourhood to see if anyone has information about what occurred last night.”

While the death is suspicious, police say there appears to be no risk to the public.

Police ask anyone with information about Marshall to call the VicPD at 250-995-7654, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
