WestJet gives back to fire-ravaged Fort McMurray

Parachutes filled with round-trip tickets floated down from the sky during community event

People living in Fort McMurray didn’t have to wait till Christmas Eve to see holiday spirit up in the sky this year.

Many of them are planning getaways, after they attended a community event held by WestJet on the weekend.

A flurry of little white parachutes full of airplane tickets fell from the sky at the SnowFlake Soiree in Fort McMurray.

Alehea Frigon and her family were there and shared their excitement on social media.

More than 80,000 people were evacuated from Fort McMurray after wildfires ravaged the city in May. Thousands of homes were destroyed in what’s considered the most expensive disaster in Canadian history and the city continues to recover.

“This has been an extremely difficult year for residents of Fort McMurray,” said WestJet spokesperson Lauren Stewart, “and with Christmas just around the corner, we wanted to give back to a community that means so much to us.”

This isn’t a new tradition for the airline, who have surprised travellers with early Christmas gifts for year.
